Man fatally shot by police after stabbing officer identified

SANTA MONICA, CA – The man fatally shot by police after allegedly stabbing a Santa Monica police officer was identified by authorities Monday.

The Los Angeles County coroner identified the man as Deyaa Abdelhadi Halaibeh, 28.

The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. Saturday when the officer was standing outside the police station in the 300 block of Olympic Drive and was confronted by a man, Santa Monica police said.

The officer, who was speaking to another resident, told the man that he had to wait his turn, and without warning, the man pulled a knife from his clothing, slashed and stabbed the officer, who armed himself and pulled back around the corner. According to police, the building where the shooting took place was located.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the officer was seriously injured but in stable condition, police said.

According to ABC 7, the officer, who has not been publicly identified, was released from a hospital on Sunday.

Santa Monica police conducted an internal investigation and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will also investigate, according to police.
