Road rage shootings shut down SR-201 at the border of West Valley City and South Salt Lake

A deadly roadside shooting led to the closure of State Route 201, also known as the 2100 South Freeway, in Salt Lake County.

After the incident came to a head around 5:30 a.m., the eastbound lanes were completely closed and traffic was detoured onto Redwood Road

The closure lasted until 9 a.m.

UHP cpl. Eddie Wright confirmed that the shooting was fatal and that one person died as a result of the shooting.

The highway patrol on scene confirmed that one person was in custody.

Authorities have not confirmed whether they are the only two involved or whether other vehicles not present at the scene were involved in the altercation involving the aggressive driver.

Officials did not say whether the person in custody was the person suspected in the road rage incident, and it was not clear whether the aggressive driver had contact with other drivers and vehicles before the shooting.

Two vehicles were at the scene of the accident, which UHP had cordoned off, one of which crashed into a Jersey barrier.

An estimated time for the road to reopen has not been determined.

At the time this article was last updated, no booking papers had been filed in the Utah courts for this case.

The investigation hampered travel in an already complicated area where closures were in place because of a Utah Department of Transportation project.

This caused a traffic jam of more than 10 miles on the way to work, and the Salt Lake City School District had to notify parents that their children would be late for school.

This report is currently being updated with new information from UHP. Update for the latest version.
