Former Brewers pitcher Matt Bush tried to escape an accident, a report says

Former Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Matt Bush, who was already struggling with alcohol-related legal issues when he was hired in 2022, attempted to flee the scene of a multi-vehicle crash in Arlington, Texas, on Friday, according to CBS News.

Citing police sources, the report said Bush, 38, faces one count of driving under the influence, one count of accident causing injury and one count of eluding. Arlington police determined that the vehicle Bush was driving ran a red light, collided with one vehicle and set off a chain reaction involving two other vehicles. Bush then got out of his car and tried to run away. When he was arrested, he refused to take a roadside sobriety test and refused to speak to investigators.

One of the drivers was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Bush came to the Brewers with a lot of baggage when he was acquired at the 2022 trade deadline in exchange for utility infielder Mark Mathias and left-handed pitching prospect Antoine Kelly.

The No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 draft has three past drunken driving convictions, the most recent of which resulted in him receiving a 51-month prison sentence in 2012. In that case, he was accused of driving under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of an accident in Florida that seriously injured a 72-year-old motorcyclist.

He was released from prison in 2015 and signed a minor league contract with the Rangers. He then took advantage of his second chance by breaking into the major leagues in 2016. When the Brewers acquired him at the 2022 trade deadline, they hoped the maneuver would help soften the blow of a trade that sent Josh Hader to San Diego.

But he hit six home runs in 23 innings with the Brewers down the stretch, part of a broader bullpen downturn that contributed to Milwaukee missing the playoffs. When he posted a 9.58 ERA in 12 games in 2023, including a walk-off home run against future Brewers first baseman Carlos Santana, Bush was designated for assignment.

He briefly returned to the Rangers organization on a minor league contract before his release in 2023.

Mathias was traded to Pittsburgh during spring training in 2023. Kelly, who participated in the 2022 Futures Game as a member of the Brewers organization, was designated for assignment by the Rangers in 2024 and was granted waivers by the Rockies.
