How to combat your child’s stress-related eczema

Being a child can sometimes be stressful, which is why many children suffer from stress-related eczema.

Children are often bombarded with new experiences, such as: B. changing schools, making friends and just growing up, which can be stressful.

“Skin is the body’s first line of defense and it is incredibly sensitive to what is happening in our lives,” says Ali Hedley, Clinical Engagement Manager at Epaderm.

“When children suffer from stress – be it the fear of the new school year or the pressure of doing homework – it is not uncommon for their skin to react,” she continues. “Stress hormones like cortisol can cause dryness and irritation and can even trigger the appearance of eczema. It’s almost as if the skin is expressing something that the child may not be able to put into words.”

How to deal with stress-related rashes

Recognize the signs

Knowing what causes eczema flare-ups and recognizing the signs can help you better manage the symptoms.

“Stress-related skin problems can manifest themselves in a variety of ways, including redness, dryness and itchy patches,” explains Ali. “In children with eczema, these symptoms can worsen under stress. Being aware of these signs and taking action early can help prevent further problems.”

Prioritize self-care

The first step is to make sure your child gets enough sleep, exercise and good food.

“Ensuring your child gets enough sleep, exercises regularly, and eats healthily can improve their overall well-being, which is reflected in healthier skin,” she advises.

Stay hydrated

Drinking water throughout the day can help relieve dry skin.

“Stress-related dry skin is often the result of hormonal imbalances that lead to a lack of moisture,” says the expert. “Encourage your child to drink plenty of water to keep their skin hydrated.”

Moisturize regularly

Incorporate moisture into your everyday life.

“Incorporating regular moisturizer into your child’s skincare routine is a simple but effective way to combat dry, irritated skin,” explains Ali.

She recommends using fragrance- and steroid-free creams like Epaderm cream and Epaderm ointment to soothe irritated skin.
