The stars of ITV drama Joan have defended the real-life inspiration behind the hit series.

Joan sees Sophie Turner in the title role, based on the true life story of Joan Hannington. To make ends meet and see her daughter again, Joan turns into a jewelry thief to get the money she desperately needs.

Desperate for a fresh start, she runs away from her ex, a criminal named Gary, and soon her world collides with Bosie Hannington, who introduces her to antiques, and she soon becomes one of London’s biggest jewel thieves.

The show was met with controversy after some accused the show of glorifying crime. However, two of the stars – who play Boisie and Albie in the series – have defended the real Joan.

Frank said on the show today: “I think when you don’t have a lot and you have certain cards, you get dealt them. She took diamonds from people who had a lot of money. I think we can forgive her for that.”, that’s where I personally stand.

“I think in this show a mother’s love can transcend morality. I think that’s what we’re going back to as well.”

Gershwyn also shared his thoughts, adding, “I think both in terms of the direction and the way Sophie played it on the show, you always feel like the driving force is there, when you say, ‘I have to do this for myself and my daughter’.”

“I understand what you are saying about glorifying crime, but we hear so much about criminals of the past when they were men. She’s been dealt the cards she’s been dealt and she’s not trying to hurt anyone, but it’s definitely a gray area.”

Joan always insisted that she only stole from those who could afford it and never felt guilty for her crimes. In her book she recalls the moment she stole £800,000 worth of diamonds.

“One day I was sent to the safe at the back of the store, where the security cameras weren’t working, to collect some loose diamonds. I opened the safe and trays of bright white stones glittered back at me,” she wrote in her book.

“With my heart racing, I grabbed a handful of diamonds from each tray and swallowed them. I didn’t know it at the time, but I had swallowed about £800,000 worth of stones.”

Joan was arrested at age 24 for using a stolen checkbook and sentenced to 30 months in prison. However, she faced no punishment for stealing the jewels.

The next episode of Joan airs tonight on ITV1 and can now be seen in full on ITVX
