Joker: Folie À Deux suffered a disappointing opening weekend, grossing an estimated $40 million at the U.S. box office – less than half the amount earned by the first film in the supervillain origin story franchise.

Richard Lawson from Vanity Fair dismissed Folie À Deux as “terrifyingly boring”with the BBC’s Nicholas Barber agreeing that it’s “definitely not much fun”.

In the New York Post, Johnny Oleksinski writes: “Almost two and a half hours long The pathologically unnecessary film from director Todd Phillips goes through so many possible reasons for existence. But as ‘Deux’ becomes increasingly disturbing, repulsive and strange on the hunt, it ultimately never finds a satisfying conclusion.”

Will there be a third? joker Film?

Both Phoenix and Phillips, who also directed the first film, have stated that they have no plans to direct the film joker Franchise into a trilogy. “It was fun to play in that kind of sandbox for two movies, but I think we said what we wanted to say in this world” the director told Variety in August.

Phoenix has since said the physical demands of the performance joker – he had to lose around 22 kilos for the role – may be too big to justify a third film.
