NASCAR’s worst Cup accident ever occurred at Talladega

Talladega isn’t about that If The big one is coming, but When.

After five laps of the 188-lap race had run at the superspeedway, the field battled for position with Austin Cindric and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. at the front while Todd Gilliland was lapped.

As the field sped past Gilliland, Cindric got too far into the lead, and Brad Keselowski was then pushed by Joey Logano’s No. 22 Penske into his former No. 2 Penske machine, causing Cindric to spin out – and the rest of the way field behind him.

A total of 28 cars were involved in the accident, the highest number ever recorded in a Cup Series accident.

In 2002, about 30 cars in the Busch Series (now XFinity) were collected in a crash also at Talladega, but the record below is the record for the Cup Series.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr took his second win of the season after the Daytona 500, but will not advance to the next round of the playoffs as he has already been eliminated. Kyle Larson finished fourth, just 0.006 seconds separating Stenhouse and second-place Keselowski, while William Byron was third.
