2 dead after high-speed car hits pole: Oakland police

OAKLAND, Calif. – According to police, two people were killed early Saturday morning in Oakland when the vehicle they were in crashed into a utility pole.

Just before 3:45 a.m., officers responded to a single-vehicle crash at 51st Avenue and San Leandro Street. Both the driver and the passenger were injured and died at the scene of the accident.

Police believe the driver was traveling eastbound on San Leandro Street at a high rate of speed in a stolen vehicle and crashed into a utility pole.

It is unknown whether alcohol or drugs played a role in this collision.
