Leaders respond to weekend crime in Bricktown

Oklahoma City has been committed to political work to reduce crime in Bricktown for decades.

Police linked the incidents to minors who were in the area late at night.

In 2023, the city set an earlier curfew for most unaccompanied minors, who now must leave the district by 9 p.m., with a few exceptions.

“These things seemed to be working,” said District 7 Councilwoman Nikki Nice. “From what I’ve read so far, this appears to have happened right outside of that curfew.”

Mayor David Holt had no comment on this weekend’s events. A representative for the Greater OKC Chamber also declined to comment, citing the need for more details.

Oklahoma City police are expected to release more details Monday.

“This happened in Lower Bricktown,” Nice added. “The things that are happening in Lower Bricktown that I think we need to continue to address are lighting issues.”

Nice said several community members in Bricktown support her mission to add more lighting. She praised the Oklahoma City Police Department, which has a station in Bricktown and is expanding its presence on weekends.

“Our thoughts are with the victims of the senseless violence we are currently experiencing in our downtown community,” said a statement posted on the Visit Bricktown OKC Facebook page. “Please pray and support employees and businesses as we all work together to get through these difficult times in the district and our community.”

Several injured in weekend crime in Bricktown

Oklahoma City police responded to a stabbing near Sheridan and Mickey Mantle early Saturday morning.

According to police, a fight broke out in which one of the men involved stabbed another.

According to police, two separate shootings occurred Saturday evening in Bricktown, leaving four injured and three arrested.

The first case occurred just before 10 p.m. near the 200 block of Bass Pro Drive, where authorities say a person was shot in the arm during a fight. The injured person was found near a bridge in the area, police said.

No suspect has been arrested in connection with this shooting.

Coincidentally, a second shooting was confirmed in the same downtown area just before midnight. All four injured suffered non-life-threatening injuries. That shooting happened near a chicken restaurant and a movie theater, police said.

Four people were injured and three were taken into custody after a second shooting Saturday evening in Oklahoma City’s Bricktown neighborhood, police said.

Investigators said early Sunday that the two shootings were unrelated.

None of these injuries were considered life-threatening, authorities confirmed.
