Riverdale shooting: Pursuit of stolen vehicle leads to police-involved shootings in south suburbs, police say

RIVERDALE, Ill. (WLS) – A police-involved shootout occurred Sunday while pursuing a stolen vehicle in the southern suburbs

The incident began around 12:15 p.m. when officers found a suspected stolen vehicle, Riverdale police said.

As officers prepared a traffic stop, the stolen vehicle began to flee and drove onto a sidewalk, officials said.

The stolen vehicle was pursued until police performed two pit maneuvers to stop it.

When the vehicle was stopped, a passenger in the front seat pointed a gun at the officers, police officials said. An officer in another police vehicle shot at the armed suspect.

After the shots were fired, several suspects fled the vehicle and ran into Harvey. Two people were arrested, according to Riverdale police.

Police were later told that a person with “permanent injuries who may have been involved in the incident” was taken to a local hospital.

Riverdale Police and Illinois State Police continue to investigate the incident.
