SWEDEN – A Maryland man was arrested after a nearly four-hour standoff early Sunday in the Oxford County town of Sweden, according to the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office.

According to information on the sheriff’s office Facebook page, James Godfrey Shepherd, 65, of Chesapeake Beach, Maryland, was arrested and charged with aggravated domestic violence and creating a standoff with police.

Sheriff’s deputies and Bridgton police officers responded to a residence on Black Mountain Road in Sweden around 1:45 a.m. Sunday after receiving a report of a suspected domestic dispute.

When officers arrived, a 64-year-old woman with a head injury was leaving the home, officials said. United Ambulance Service took the woman to Bridgton Hospital where she was treated for her injuries.

Shepherd, who was still at the apartment, refused to make contact with officers, officials said. Officers reportedly set up a cordon around the building while they waited for a search warrant to enter the apartment.

The warrant was served at approximately 5:10 a.m., and while officers were executing the warrant, they located Shepherd at the residence and arrested him without further incident.

Shepherd was taken to the Oxford County Jail in southern Paris.

Information about Shepherd’s release on bail was not available Sunday.
