Arsenal are suffering injury scares as Kai Havertz leaves the Germany squad

Arsenal striker Kai Havertz has withdrawn from the German squad for the upcoming Nations League games in October’s international squad due to a knee injury.

The former Chelsea attacker was in remarkable form at the start of the 2024/25 season, helping the north London giants to a fast start in both the Premier League and Champions League. Havertz scored his fourth goal in as many games on Saturday to lift Arsenal to a 3-1 win over Southampton at the Emirates Stadium.

That was his sixth club goal in all competitions this season, but manager Mikel Arteta will be sweating over his fitness over the next few weeks before they continue their title hunt away to Bournemouth later this month.

Gunners manager Mikel Arteta waxed lyrical after the 3-1 win over Havertz, saying: “When he trains he wants more and he’s not happy with what he’s doing because in my opinion he’s still a has a higher level. “Obviously he’s surrounded by incredible players, but something has changed in him and that confidence, you can really feel it and now he’s bringing his best to games and winning football games, which is great.”

Arsenal were missing several key first-team stars on Saturday, including Jurrien Timber and Ben White, who did not make the matchday squad. However, the defensive pair hope to be available again once club football resumes, with captain Martin Odegaard also expected to return at the end of October.

However, there were fitness improvements elsewhere as new signing Mikel Merino made his second appearance at Arsenal and Takehiro Tomiyasu made his first appearance of the season.
