Sen. Mark Kelly says the government needs to do a “better job” of informing Americans that “there is a huge amount of misinformation” about the election

Washington –Sen. Mark Kelly said on Sunday that the federal government must do its part to inform Americans about the large amount of election misinformation being consumed on social media platforms such as X, TikTok, Facebook and Instagram.

“It’s up to us, the people who serve in Congress and the White House, to get the information out there that there is a tremendous amount of misinformation in this election, and it’s not going to stop on November 5th.” Kelly said on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan.”.”

Kelly, who sits on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said he has seen these misinformation operations target not only his state of Arizona but also other battleground states.

“The chances that the content you see and the comments you see come from one of those three countries, I would estimate 20 to 30%, are very high,” Kelly said.

At a committee hearing last month on foreign threats to the 2024 election, Kelly presented screenshots of Russian-made websites that showed fabricated headlines reminiscent of Fox News and the Washington Post aimed at voters in battleground states.

“My constituents in Arizona and others — they are trying to influence the outcome of this election, and that is absolutely unachievable,” Kelly said at the Sept. 18 hearing. “We have to do something about it.”

According to CBS News, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump each have the support of 49% of Arizona voters. Battlefield Tracker As of September 30th.

Trump returned to another battleground state, Pennsylvania, on Saturday hold a rally in Butler three months after one attempted assassination on him. He was joined by members of his own party and billionaire Elon Musk, who said Trump was the only way to preserve democracy and warned of a final election if he doesn’t win in November.

Speaking to CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday, Kelly called the social media mogul a hypocrite.

“He stands next to the man who tried to overturn the 2020 election on January 6th and says somehow this will be the last election and they will take your vote away,” Kelly said. “And you know, it just doesn’t pass the logic test.”

At Friday’s White House press conference, President Biden – speaking from the podium for the first time since taking office – said he was confident there would be a free and fair election, but pointed to the 2021 Capitol insurrection when he was concerned about whether this would be a peaceful transfer of power.

“The things that Trump said and the things that he said last time when he didn’t like the outcome of the election were very dangerous,” Mr. Biden said. “If you notice, I noticed that the Republican vice presidential nominee didn’t say he would accept the results of the election, and they didn’t even accept the results of the last election.”
