New Age | Teenager stabbed to death in city

A youth was reportedly stabbed to death by muggers on the Azampur footbridge in the capital’s Uttara district on Sunday morning.

The victim is Mohammad Sohan, 27, a driver for a private company in Pabna.

The robbers stabbed Sohan and took away his mobile phone and wallet around 5 a.m. as he was crossing the road via the Azampur footbridge, witnesses and family said.

Rickshaw driver Mohammad Rakib and other pedestrians rescued him in a critical condition and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead, they said.

Mohammad Faruk, head of the DMCH police outpost, said that the body was kept at the DMCH mortuary for autopsy.

“We have informed the police about the incident,” he added.

Officer-in-Charge of Uttara East Police Station MD Mahibbullah said it has not yet been confirmed whether he was attacked by robbers.

“The process of filing a case in this regard is underway,” the OC said, adding that the victim was first taken to the Kuwait Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital and later to the DMCH.

“I spoke to the rickshaw driver and other witnesses but could not confirm whether it was a case of mugging,” the OC said.

The victim’s brother Mohammad Shaon said he learned over the phone that his brother had been stabbed by robbers and was admitted to DMCH.

“My brother came to Dhaka. The robbers stopped him on the Azampur footbridge and stabbed him to death. They fled the scene and took his cell phone and wallet. “Pedestrians informed me that he was taken to Dhaka Medical,” Shaon said.

He said his brother was a resident of Pabna Sadar upazila.
