Iran-backed Iraqi militias escalate drone strikes on Israel

Iran-backed militias in Iraq claimed to have carried out a new drone attack on Israel on October 6. The attack was the latest in a growing number of drone strikes by Iranian-backed groups.

A drone from Iraq killed two Israeli soldiers last week, an example of how the weapons systems are becoming increasingly dangerous.

The report on the Iraqi attack came as Iran appeared to be nervous about Israel’s response to Iran’s Oct. 1 missile attack.

Iran has sought to highlight its multi-front war against Israel to show that it can hit back and maintain pressure on Israel. This became clear on October 6, when rockets were fired from Gaza into Israeli communities and there were numerous Hezbollah attacks on northern Israel.

The Iraqi groups supporting the Iranian war are called the “Islamic Resistance in Iraq,” an umbrella term for several pro-Iranian groups sometimes referred to as “Shiite militias,” the Popular Mobilization Units.

“The Islamic Resistance in Iraq has carried out a drone strike on the occupied Golan Heights in southwestern Syria,” the report said. It was also said that the drone was targeting the Golan.

A drone threat also triggered a false alarm on October 5th. It was unclear whether the Iraqi drone entered Israeli airspace.

The IDF said at 5 a.m. that “in the last hour, two UAVs launched from the east toward Israeli territory were successfully intercepted by an Israeli Navy missile boat in the northern part of the Mediterranean Sea.” No injuries were reported. Additionally, a UAV launched from the east was intercepted by the IAF off the coast of Gush Dan. No injuries were reported.”

The reference to “East” appeared to refer to the Iraqi threat. The flight path of the drones that landed over the sea is interesting.

The Iraqi militias have also attacked southern Israel in the past.

“In recent months, the Iraqi resistance had also attacked sensitive and important points in the port of Eilat in the south of occupied Palestine. “This group had previously warned in previous operations that if the Zionist regime continued its attacks on the Gaza Strip, it would increase its operations against that regime’s positions,” Iranian state media said.

Iranian state media is trying to play up these attacks to make them seem more important than they otherwise would be. However, there is no doubt that Iraqi militias are increasing their threats and capabilities.

Iraqi militias’ attempts to attack Israel with drones come as Iran also focuses on other issues. She is concerned about the Houthis in Yemen and recent attacks by U.S. Central Command on the Iranian-backed group.

“U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces carried out attacks on 15 Houthi targets in Iranian-backed Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen at approximately 5 p.m. (Sanaa time) today. These targets included the Houthis’ offensive military capabilities. “These actions were taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer for U.S., coalition and commercial vessels,” U.S. Central Command said Oct. 4.

Iran is also closely monitoring Israeli attempts to stop arms smuggling to Hezbollah. Iranian and Syrian media reported that there was an airstrike in Qusayr, near the Lebanese-Syrian border.

“This news comes as Zionist warplanes were spotted in Syrian skies over the Jordan-Syria border triangle… This is not the first time that the Zionist regime has attacked the Syria-Lebanon border. On Friday morning, Israel cut off communications by attacking another area on the border of these two countries,” Iranian IRNA reported.

“News sources reported that the Israeli occupation army attacked around the Al-Masna border crossing on the Lebanon-Syria border.”

Iran is very concerned about these incidents, as numerous reports show.

Iran is also focused on maintaining Hezbollah’s threats against Israel. Hezbollah has suffered serious setbacks. However, Iran is increasing its ongoing missile and drone threats against Israel.
