Melvin Lee Vines was held without bond after a fatal shooting in Bethel

A Durham man was arrested in Pitt County Saturday evening and is charged with murder and attempted murder.

Officials with the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office say deputies responded to a Latham Rd. around 10:55 p.m. in Bethel, where there was a reporter shootout. Arriving officers located 25-year-old Elijah Rashawn Everette, who was pronounced deceased at the scene. They also learned that Thomas Everette Jr. was also shot but was not injured.

According to officers, the perpetrator, Melvin Lee Vines, 66, of Durham, was still in the apartment.

Vines was arrested and booked into the Pitt County Detention Center without bail. Vines will make his first court appearance on Monday.

Vines faces the following charges:
