Chadwell St Mary man Brett Baker has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for multiple sex offences

A MAN previously convicted of multiple sexual offenses has been jailed thanks to the work of our professionals.

Brett Baker appeared at Basildon Crown Court on Friday October 4th where he was sentenced to 17 years in prison following an inquest by our child abuse investigation team.

An investigation into the 33-year-old was launched on January 27, 2021, after Essex Police received a report of concerns about a child in the Thurrock district.

Baker was arrested and released on bail while officers conducted several inquiries, including sensitive interviews with the young victim.

In the interviews, which were supported by independent charities, the victim revealed that Baker had sexually abused her on multiple occasions.

In addition to these investigations, the forensic specialists also found important evidence that should be of great importance to the investigation.

Baker, of River View, Grays, was charged with two counts of rape, three counts of assault by penetration and one count of sexual assault.

He denied all allegations but was found guilty of all charges by a jury on Tuesday May 28 after a week-long trial at Basildon Crown Court.

He appeared in the same court on Friday, October 4, where he was given a 17-year sentence, made up of 16 years in custody and one year on licence.

He will be placed on the sex offenders’ register for life and has been given an indefinite sexual harassment prevention order.

Detective Constable Jeffery Wainman, the officer investigating the case, said: “This was a complex investigation where our priority was to protect the victim and gather the evidence necessary to criminally convict Baker.”

“It is difficult to understand the suffering Baker caused the young victim. Your courage in speaking to us and explaining Baker’s behavior should never be underestimated.”

DC Wainman added: “I would like to commend the officers in this case who spent hours analyzing disturbing evidence to secure this conviction against Baker.”

“Our child abuse investigation team continues to work closely with partners, including social care, to protect vulnerable children and investigate child abuse.”
