Driver shot by police officer after ‘fight’ during traffic stop in Chesterfield

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. – Authorities say a driver has died after being shot by police following a “fight” during a traffic stop in Chesterfield County early Sunday morning.

It happened along Iron Bridge Road and Jessup Road after an officer stopped the driver at 4:45 a.m., Lt. Debby K. Tennissen of the Chesterfield Police Department.

“At some point during this encounter, a struggle occurred between the officer and the driver of the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle managed to flee the encounter, after which an exchange of gunfire ensued,” Tennissen said. “After a short vehicle pursuit, a second exchange of gunfire occurred.”

According to police, the driver, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers were injured, Tennissen said.

“No details are known at this time and this incident remains under investigation,” Tennissen said.

Officials said Iron Bridge Road and Jessup Road would remain closed “for an extended period of time.”
