GUJ condemns police attack on Goan photojournalists

The Goa Union of Journalists (GUJ) has strongly condemned the police attack on a photojournalist during a protest rally in Margao late Saturday evening.

Goa photojournalist Santosh Mirajkar was attacked by police while discharging his duty on the field.

The incident occurred when police tried to disperse protesters near Colva road junction. After most of the protesters left, police used lathicharge to clear the area.

Mirajkar had questioned the police after they asked the media to delete the lathicharge video footage.

In response, police officers beat him with batons, even after he claimed to be a journalist.

“This is a direct attack on press freedom. “The police action is highly reprehensible,” said GUJ president Rajtilak Naik.

The GUJ calls for the immediate suspension of the police officers involved and calls for a thorough investigation into the incident
