Surry County road rage shooting suspect captured after fleeing on ferry: police

JAMES CITY COUNTY, Va. – A road rage incident that led to a shooting ended in an arrest after a suspect attempted to flee on a ferry in James City County Saturday afternoon, police said.

The shooting happened near Monticello Avenue and Greensprings Plantation Drive around 3 p.m.

“The shooting occurred when a vehicle with three occupants turned from Centerville Road onto Monticello Avenue while the suspect was driving a red Toyota Solara on Centerville Road toward John Tyler Highway,” police said in a statement James City County.

Joseph Adams, 44, of Surry County, allegedly fired multiple shots into a vehicle.

“The victim’s vehicle arrived at the intersection of Monticello Avenue and Greensprings Plantation Drive, where first responders began providing life-saving medical treatment,” the release said.

Police said officers learned that Adams was boarding the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry bound for Surry County.

When the ferry arrived on the Surry County side, authorities with the Surry County Sheriff’s Office took Adams into custody.

One of the victims was airlifted to VCU Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, while the other was taken to Riverside REGional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

A third person in the vehicle was not injured.

According to police, Adam was initially arrested for drunk driving and taken to the Virginai Peninsula Regional Jail. Pending the outcome of the investigation, additional firearms-related charges could be filed.

Traffic in the area reopened around 7 p.m
