Dead Space is getting a fan game that you can play in Discord

Key insights

  • With no sign of a new Dead Space game or remake, fans are taking the series into their own hands.
  • One such project, Deep Space, seeks to build an entirely new Dead Space campaign within Discord using a bot.
  • It is entirely text-based and follows a new protagonist set between the first two Dead Space games.

Earlier this year, reports surfaced that a Dead Space 2 remake was shelved due to poor sales, but EA later claimed that it was never in development to begin with. Either way, it looks like the series is on hold again, but with fans hungry for more, they’re taking matters into their own hands.

One of those fans, llSCPll, has announced that they are developing a Dead Space game called Deep Space that will be played entirely on Discord. They explain that it is “running”. […] through a bot,” meaning it is text-based. However, it still features rendered images and a sound engine with completely original assets.

“Deep Space is a free game and is expected to take at least five to seven hours to complete upon full release,” llSCPll said. “There is no direct profit from the game itself. We love Dead Space, and we know many of you do too. This passion project is our homage to the series and adding our own twists to the plot. Yes, American Idol is a real “A time-based game, just like the other entries in Dead Space, and it has undergone thorough stress testing and optimization.”

The story of Dead Space: Deep Space follows a new protagonist

This fan game does not attempt to continue Isaac Clarke’s story after the third game, but instead follows a new protagonist named Felix Everett. Set in the year 2509, between the first two Dead Space games, we take on the role of this new crew who investigate the Centauri space station after it has gone completely dark.

You can see how the game works in practice in the screenshots embedded above. Felix has a health bar, stasis charges, and equipped weapons, all of which you can manage through the Discord bot. Although it’s text-based, you can still use your weapons to dismember necromorphs in real time, with your health, ammo, and enemy status relayed to you live.

Each room has a map with a dot representing your character, as well as save stations so you can record your progress. It has all the survival horror and dead space hallmarks, just in Discord bot form. It’s an interesting experiment to say the least, but many fans’ biggest concern is how long a project like this will survive before EA intervenes. Time will tell, but if you want to keep up with the project you can join the Discord server here.
