Jorgenson went “over his limit” in Pogacar’s attack, Kelderman is showing good form in Emilia

Nobody could take on Tadej Pogacar at the Giro dell’Emilia on Saturday, not even Visma | Rent a bike. However, they put up a brave fight with Matteo Jorgenson. The American single-handedly chased after cycling prodigy Pogacar for a while, but ultimately paid the price for his efforts. Wilco Kelderman was the best among the killer bees with seventh place.

The riders had to conquer the brutally steep San Luca climb in Bologna five times. As if that wasn’t hard enough, they were also drenched in a downpour of rain, making the race a true battle of attrition. It started early when Tadej Pogacar broke away alone on the first of five climbs up the San Luca after countering an attack from Remco Evenepoel. Jorgenson managed to hold the Slovenian for a while, but that was all.

“The track itself was already tough, but the rain made it even more challenging today,” said team leader Marc Reef on behalf of Visma | Rent a bike, talk to the team’s website. “We were in a great position at the crucial moments. Wilco and Matteo were both alert as the peloton split up after 150 kilometers. Matteo tried to follow Pogacar on San Luca, but he went just beyond his limits, from which he was unable to fully recover.” Jorgenson ultimately finished in seventeenth place.

“It was a fair and honest race,” Reef continued. “Given the strength of the field, we knew it would be difficult to fight for victory. We definitely did our best, but in the end every rider ended up where they were supposed to. With his seventh place, Wilco showed that his form is good.” Visma | LaB will have two more races before we reach the highlight of the Italian cycling autumn calendar, the Tour of Lombardy. On Monday they will compete in the Coppa Bernocchi which was won last year by Wout van Aert. On Tuesday the Dutch team will be at the start at Tre Valli Varesine.
