A 61-year-old man dies after he was allegedly stabbed by a stepson in Melbourne’s northwest

A man has died on a front lawn in Melbourne’s northwest after he was allegedly stabbed by his stepson.

Police were called to a home in Chris Court, Hillside, at around 6.50am on Friday and found 61-year-old Tony Di Falco with life-threatening injuries.

Homicide Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said officers attempted CPR and first aid when they heard a scream from inside the house.

“At this point they were confronted by a man armed with a knife,” he said.

“A shot was fired by police within the address and officers retreated from the premises through the front door.”

Inspector Thomas said a heavily pregnant 27-year-old woman, who police believe was the alleged perpetrator’s sister, ran from the back of the house.

Meanwhile, officers tried to convince the man to drop his weapon near the front door.

“He walked a short distance back down the street with members keeping as much distance from him as possible,” Inspector Thomas said.

“At this point he damaged a police vehicle, he stabbed the tire of a police vehicle and then walked towards one of our members.

“Again they attempted to drop the knife and one of our members fired several shots hitting the perpetrator, after which the perpetrator fell to the ground and was taken into custody.”

The man was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical but stable condition.

Inspector Thomas said the alleged perpetrator was known to police and may have had mental health problems in the past.

The woman was uninjured but was taken to hospital for observation.

“From what we can tell at this point, it appears to be so [the alleged] The perpetrator, who lived at a different address… showed up there unexpectedly this morning and called Triple-Zero after an argument between them [the alleged] Perpetrator and his father,” said Inspector Thomas.

The Professional Standards Command, crime scene experts and ballistics experts are investigating the incident.

Siblings remember victim as “light of the family”

Mr Di Falco’s siblings told reporters their family’s lives had been turned upside down.

“Tony was very close to us, we were a very tight-knit family,” Nick Di Falco said.

Laura Di Vito, the victim’s sister, said his family will miss him.

“As a brother, he was the clown of the family, always having jokes and making everyone laugh,” Ms. Di Vito said.

“He loved family gatherings, he enjoyed being together as a family. There was a lot of laughter and growing up with Tony at home.”

“He was your big brother who always looked out for you.”

Inspector Thomas said he spoke to officers and looked at body-worn cameras.

“It was a very confronting and disturbing scene for our members,” he said.

“From what I’ve seen, even though it’s early in the investigation, they appear to have done everything they could and they appear to have followed policy and done everything they could to resolve this shooting.” obviously to prevent.”

Inspector Thomas said the police officers involved were “clearly distressed” as social welfare and peer support officers were on site.

Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
