CTA Red Line shooting: Chicago woman charged with attempted murder

A Chicago woman has been charged with attempted murder after she allegedly shot a man on a CTA Red Line train.

The suspect has been identified as 23-year-old Indya Smith in the shooting that occurred Wednesday near the Argyle Station in Uptown.

According to police, the confrontation occurred around 8:40 a.m. when Smith reportedly spat at the 33-year-old man and argued with him before pulling out a gun and shooting him in the shoulder. The man was taken to St. Francis Hospital, where he was listed in good condition.

Smith was arrested shortly after the incident in the 5800 block of North Broadway. According to police, a weapon was seized.

Smith was charged with multiple crimes, including attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault with discharge of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. She also received a citation for weapons possession in the CTA.

She is due in court on Friday.

The Red Line experienced significant delays after the shooting. No other injuries were reported.
