One was injured in a shooting and crash on Germantown Pike involving a motorcycle club

DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF) – Dayton 24/7 Now continues to follow an incident that occurred Thursday afternoon when shots were fired during a funeral procession in West Dayton.

A group was heading up Germantown Street toward a cemetery when one of the group’s motorcycles was struck by another vehicle.

Almost immediately, shots were fired into the group.

When police arrived, they tried to figure out what happened first: the accident or the shooting.

Shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday, Dayton police received a report of gunfire on Germantown Street near Mt. Clair Avenue.

When they arrived at the scene, they were stunned by what they saw.

“When we got to the scene, there was a large crowd of probably 100 to 200 people out here,” Lt. Mark Ponichtera of the Dayton Police Department.

When the first officer saw the large crowd, a 99 signal was sent, meaning an officer needed assistance.

“When it all started, police came from everywhere, from every county,” said Dominique Smith, a West Dayton resident.

That’s when the police found the victim.

“We have a victim who was in a traffic accident but unfortunately was also shot. His condition was life-threatening, so homicide investigators and traffic police were called to the scene,” said Lt. Ponichtera.

DPD says they are working to find out exactly where the shots came from.

“We don’t know if it was a vehicle or another person or what, but we know it was a large crowd where shots were fired, so it was a pretty sensitive situation,” Lt. Ponichtera.

Area residents said it was sad that violence occurred when this group attempted to bury a loved one.

“Funerals are becoming more and more dangerous these days, like you have to come armed to a funeral, and that sounds kind of crazy, but that’s the world we live in now, you know,” Smith said.

At 4:30 p.m. Thursday, the victim was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. We will continue to update this story as we learn more.
