Oscars 2025 Predictions:
Best film editing

Of utmost importance

Weekly Commentary (updated October 3, 2024): With A Real Pain clocking in at 88 minutes and September 5 clocking in at 91 minutes, the brevity of these films stands in stark contrast to last year’s record-breaking nominations, which saw two three-hour films nominated for Best Picture (Killers of the Flower Moon” and later winner “Oppenheimer”). This begs the question: could AMPAS’ attention spans shift toward shorter and longer films, or will they find that they will love fast and effective movie watching?

Historically, longer films have been particularly represented in the film editing category because their long running times gave editors more opportunities to demonstrate their skills in maintaining narrative flow, pacing and tension. Films like “The Irishman” (209 minutes) and “Dances with Wolves” (181 minutes) were praised for their editing despite their length. However, by their nature, shorter films often require a more concise and efficient narrative, which can be equally difficult to edit. Could the industry try to reward some of these films this year?

While long epics (e.g., “Ben Hur” and “Titanic”) are admired for their ambitious scope, the academy’s attention may be focused on a more focused, concise narrative. This year, “The Brutalist”, “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” and the still unreleased “Wicked” with a playing time of more than two and a half hours are the main candidates. Maybe in the end it all doesn’t matter.

The 97th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, March 2nd. The full rankings can be found below. All film listings, titles, distributors and credited producers are not final and are subject to change.
