Douglas County teen arrested after Elkton HS placed on lockdown over gun scare

A 17-year-old from Douglas County was arrested Wednesday after reports a student was on the Elkton High School campus with a gun, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) said.

According to DCSO, on October 2, 2024, 9-1-1, dispatchers received a call from Elkton High School at approximately 1:38 p.m. reporting that they were in a self-initiated lockdown. The principal told the Dispatch that the suspension was due to a student being on campus with a gun.

At the time of the call, the student’s whereabouts were unknown, DCSO said.

Multiple officers and other law enforcement agencies responded to the scene, including the Sutherlin Police Department (SPD) and the Oregon State Police (OSP).

When the school responded, she called back and said she believed the student was no longer on campus. Other schools in the area were placed on lockdown until the student could be located.

According to DCSO, officers even contacted the student in the area of ​​Azalea Drive in Elkton. Officers seized the student’s backpack and found a Glock replica BB gun inside.

The student, who was a 17-year-old male, was taken into custody and booked into the Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center on the following charges:

  • Disorderly conduct I
  • Threatening x2
  • Violation of probation conditions

DCSO says it is continuing to investigate the incident and is working closely with school officials and agency partners.
