Eric Adams faces possible downgraded security clearance following indictment

Federal scrutiny and possible adjustments to the mayor’s security clearance are within the realm of possibility because of his alleged criminal actions and involvement with a foreign government, they say Politico.

“There is a real possibility that his license could be revoked or suspended based solely on the nature and nature of the allegations [federal authorities] Get to work setting security clearances,” Joseph Maher, a former chief intelligence officer at the Department of Homeland Security, told the outlet.

DHS is one of the agencies responsible for overseeing security clearances.

Maher said it would be “surprising” if there were no changes to Adams’ security clearances.

As mayor of the country’s largest city, Adams likely has top-secret security clearances that allow him to obtain highly sensitive information from federal law enforcement agencies. A downgrade of his security clearance would mean he would receive fewer details about sensitive information from these agencies.

When asked Tuesday whether he had the same security status as before the indictment, Adams declined to give a direct answer.

“The federal government decides on security clearance, and you have to go to them,” the mayor said.

Deputy Mayor for Communications Fabien Levy told the outlet that Adams “continues to be briefed on a variety of issues important to the city,” but did not specify the level of clearance.

Adams defiantly maintained his innocence despite the criminal charges filed against him on September 26th. Days later, he tried to dismiss part of the case, claiming it was “extraordinarily vague.”

But even after Adams pleaded not guilty in federal court last week, prosecutors indicated they might pursue additional charges against the embattled mayor.

Meanwhile, the latest indictment, sparked by a nearly year-long FBI investigation involving raids, cell phone seizures and subpoenas, has reduced Adams’ inner circle to a shell of his former identity, as has happened to many of his closest allies in the New York City government Fall was resigned.

The Democratic mayor suggested Wednesday that he would be willing to even accept the support of former President Donald Trump if he wants to fight the charges in court and save his political career.
