“Didn’t talk to anyone” – Berrettini on overcoming injury fears and winning the opening game in Shanghai

“Didn’t talk to anyone” – Berrettini on overcoming injury fears and winning the opening game in Shanghai

So far in 2024, the former world number 6 has missed four ATP Masters 1000 events and most recently came dangerously close to missing a fifth – the Shanghai Masters. A few days ago he had to abandon his round of 16 match against Frenchman Arthur Fils at the Japan Open in Tokyo because of discomfort in his abdomen, the area that had caused him problems in the past.

However, the 28-year-old put the injury behind him and flew to Shanghai for the penultimate Masters 1000 tournament of the season, opening his season on Thursday with a hard-fought victory over Australian Christopher O’Connell.

In the post-match interview, Berrettini spoke about how, with the support of his team and family, he was able to muster the courage to get back on the pitch.

“One thing I have done so far is that I am really resilient, with the help of many people, my team, who are close to me in bad and good moments,” he said.

There were a few days after Tokyo where I didn’t speak to anyone.

I didn’t really have much fun, but I thank them and my family at home and everyone who helps me. I found the energy again.”

In a press conference later, Berrettini assessed the contribution of his fellow Italians, including Jannik Sinner, who recently reached the China Open final and has a win-loss record of 59-6 this season.

“I’ll take care of her,” he said. “I mean, I look for their results to bring the energy back. I always supported her in Davis Cup last year to find the energy to return.

“Obviously what Jannik is doing is incredible. Yesterday he once again proved how high his level is. I take inspiration from that and I think all Italians do, and that’s why we have so many players who are really good.”

Matteo Berrettini will next meet Holger Rune in Shanghai

Matteo Berrettini’s best performance at the Shanghai Masters came in 2019 when he reached the semifinals. Notably, this was his first time participating in the main draw, and he only competed here this year.

“I like the conditions here,” the Italian added in his press release. “I know it’s been five years and different players, different situations.”

In the second round he will face a strong opponent: Holger Rune, number 12 in Shanghai. He met Rune three times on the ATP Tour, with the Dane being favored 2-1 in the direct duel.

“Holger played well last week, so it’s always a difficult game against him. We played in Cincinnati a few months ago. I expect a difficult task, but at the same time I have the confidence to step on the pitch and win the game.”

Rune comes into the ATP Masters 1000 event after reaching the semi-finals at the Japan Open and received a bye in the first round in Shanghai.
