Gosling was ready to play grieving father Jack Salmon, but his idea of the character packing on a few serious pounds? Not exactly approved by Jackson. So Gosling got the boot just days before filming. The kicker? He bulked up by drinking melted Haagen Dazs. Talk about devotion gone wrong! It turns out that Gosling’s vision for the role didn’t match the director’s, and next thing you know, he’s out and Mark Wahlberg is in.

Back then, Gosling saw Jack Salmon, a grieving father, as someone who had gained a few pounds. He felt the figure should weigh 210 pounds to reflect the emotional weight of losing a daughter. So Gosling took matters into his own hands – consuming melted Haagen-Dazs ice cream to bulk up. “I really believed he should weigh 210 pounds,” Gosling told The Hollywood Reporter.

But when Gosling showed up on set weighing 30 pounds, Jackson wasn’t happy. In fact, he was completely unprepared for this sudden change. According to Gosling, the two didn’t talk much during pre-production and the lack of communication proved to be a major problem. “We didn’t talk much during the pre-production process, which was the problem,” Gosling said. “I just showed up on set and I was wrong. Then I was fat and unemployed.”

However, that was not the only version of events. Jackson’s wife and co-worker Fran Walsh had a slightly different opinion. She recalled Gosling expressing doubts about the role because he thought he was too young to play the role. Walsh and Jackson reassured him and said they could age him using makeup and hair thinning techniques. But as production got closer, it became clear that Gosling didn’t feel comfortable in the role. “It wasn’t until we were in pre-production and had the cast there that it became more and more clear: he was so uncomfortable going forward and we started to feel that he wasn’t right,” Walsh explained.

With a few days to go, Jackson ended Gosling’s involvement and hired Mark Wahlberg, who was a decade older and a better fit for the director’s vision. While The Lovely Bones didn’t exactly become a classic, the decision to replace Gosling changed his career.

Instead of playing Jack Salmon, Gosling starred in films like “Blue Valentine” – where he played a similar character, only with far fewer pounds – and “La La Land,” “Drive” and “Barbie.” He’s proven time and time again that he’s one of the most versatile actors around, even if The Lovely Bones didn’t perform as expected.
