The community of Effingham, north of Durban, is in shock after a knife attack.

“We have done some background checks and the report we got back shows they are a decent, loving family Effingham CPF chairman.

An elderly woman and a teenager were stabbed to death in their home in Simplace on Wednesday.

According to authorities, the 74-year-old and the 13-year-old died at the scene.

Makan-Maharaj confirmed that her exco held a meeting on Wednesday evening about the attack.

“We will inform you [residents] how the situation develops and we receive an update from SAPS.

“However, the community has come together and there is a feeling that mental health is so important and that we need to put a lot of focus on that as we move forward with programs in our community.”

Meanwhile, SAPS KZN spokesman Robert Netshiunda says they are investigating cases of murder and attempted murder.

“The 50-year-old woman and a boy, whose age is still unknown, were found injured and taken to hospital.”
