Palestinian activist Issa Amro accepted the Right Livelihood Prize, seen by some as an alternative Nobel Prize, on Thursday (October 3, 2024) for his “nonviolent resistance to Israel’s illegal occupation” in the West Bank, the jury said.

Mr. Amro was born in the city of Hebron, a West Bank hotspot city where about 1,000 Jewish settlers live under heavy Israeli military protection among about 200,000 Palestinians.

The 44-year-old founded the group Youth Against Settlements, which campaigns against the spread of Jewish settlements in the area, communities that are widely considered illegal under international law.

“It’s a miracle I still exist,” Mr. Amro said.
