An 8-year-old girl tragically died as a result of a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Jefferies Hwy (US Hwy 15) and Pleasant Grove Road on Saturday evening, September 28th at 11:01 p.m. Five other people were also injured, two of them seriously. A southbound Chevrolet Suburban and a westbound Chevrolet pickup truck collided at the intersection. Both vehicles were badly damaged and overturned. All occupants of the Suburban were restrained, but one side of the vehicle was torn off, causing multiple injuries to the child. Other occupants of the SUV performed CPR on the girl until firefighters and paramedics arrived. Four fire department ambulances were on site. No medical helicopter could fly due to thunderstorms in the area. The 8-year-old was transported by Fire-Rescue Medic 19 to Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro as an emergency. The male driver of the pickup was transported to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston as an emergency. A 10-year-old girl, who also suffered multiple life-threatening injuries, was transported in Ambulance 26 to the Shawn Jenkins Children’s Trauma Center at MUSC. The remaining three patients were transported to Colleton Medical Center. Traffic in the area was detoured for over four hours while SC Hwy Patrol investigated the collision. MAIT responded to the scene. The Colleton County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the traffic stop.
