Horror in Delhi hospital: Doctor shot dead by teenagers posing as nursing home patients

In an incident that sent shockwaves across Delhi, a doctor at a nursing home was shot and killed by two minors disguised as patients early on Thursday morning. The victim, Javed Akhtar, a Unani Practitioner (BUMS), was attacked at Nima Hospital around 1:45 am.

According to police reports, the attackers, both believed to be around 16 years old, had arrived at the facility under the guise of seeking treatment for an injury. Authorities said one of the suspects had visited the hospital the day before. After receiving medical attention, the minors went to the victim’s cabin where they fatally shot him before fleeing the scene.

After hearing the gunshot, staff rushed to his cabin and found Akhtar slumped on his chair, bleeding profusely from his head and lying in a pool of blood.

Police believe the murder may have been premeditated as observations were apparently made after the attack. Police officers are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the hospital’s reception area, changing room and gallery to support their investigation.

The shocking incident has raised significant concerns about safety measures in healthcare facilities, particularly amid a nationwide movement calling for improved working conditions and safety for healthcare professionals. This movement was rekindled in response to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital and College in Calcutta in August, which led to widespread protests among young doctors.

The Calcutta victim’s body was discovered in a seminar room on August 9, sparking a wave of outrage and demonstrations across the country. Although the protests briefly subsided, young doctors resumed their agitation on October 1, increasing demands for better protection and working conditions in the medical field.
