Dead Talents Society leads race for Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards

John Hsu’s horror comedy Society of Dead Talents With eleven nominations, including Best Narrative Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Sandrine Pinna, she leads the race for this year’s Golden Horse Awards.

The film is set in a fictional underworld where ghosts can linger in the mortal realm by competing to haunt people. The film is produced by Taiwan’s Activator Co., Sony Pictures International Productions and several other local companies.

Tom Lin’s followed in the price race Yen and Ai Lee and Geng Juns Bel Amiwho each received eight nominations.

Society of Dead Talents And Bel Ami are both nominated for best narrative film along with Ray Yeung Everything will be fineYeo Siew-huas Strange eyes and Lou Yes An unfinished film. All five of these films are also nominated for the Best Director category.

Best Actor nominees include King Jieh-wen (A trip in spring), Chang Chen (The emberss), Yau Hawk-sau (The way we talk), Wanlop Rungkumjad (hybrid) and Zhang Zhiyong (Bel Ami). Wanlop is a Thai actor who played a foreign nurse in the film hybridwhich premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and was awarded the Camera d’Or Special Mention.

Nominated for best actress are Patra Au Ga-man (Everyone should be finel), Kimi Hsia (Yen and Ai Lee), Chung Suet-ying (The way we talk), Sylvia Chang (daughter of daughter) and Sandra Ng (Love lies).

In addition to Pinna, the Best Supporting Actress nominations went to Pets Tseng (Large), Yang Kuei-mei (Yen and Ai Lee), Lu Yi-ching (hybrid) and Eugenie Liu (daughter of daughter). The Best Supporting Actor award went to Lee Kang-sheng (Strange eyes), Mo Tzu-yi (The embers), Zeng Guo-cheng (Yen and Ai Lee), Daniel Hong (hybrid) and Shih Ming-shuai (Gatao: Like father, like son).

Best New Director nominations include Qiu Yang for There must be some rainwho won a Special Jury Prize in Encounters at this year’s Berlin Film Festival; Peng Tzu-hui and Wang Ping-wen for A trip in springwho was awarded the Silver Shell for Best Director at the 2023 San Sebastian Film Festival; and Chiang Wei-liang and Yin You-qiao for hybrid. Also nominated in this category are Ye Xingyu for Three castrated goatswhich will be screened in the Asian Future competition at the upcoming Tokyo International Film Festival, and Ho Miu-ki’s Love lies.

All nominated films will be screened at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival (November 7-24), while the awards ceremony will take place on November 23 at the Taipei Music Center.
