Family dog scares away burglars during attempted break-in in Little Ferry

LITTLE FERRY (WABC) – Police are investigating a brazen and frightening attempted burglary in Little Ferry, New Jersey.

Burglars broke through the screen windows of a house to get in but were scared away by the family dog.

“We believe they were trying to break into this home to get keys to a BMW and an Audi that were in the driveway,” Police Chief James Walters said.

Security video shows the two men attacking the home at 5 a.m. Wednesday while the family slept upstairs.

“The first window they went to was in front of a couch and they didn’t want to gain entry that way. So they went to the other window, same thing, cut the screen, pried the window open and that’s when they heard this. “Dog barking,” Walters said.

Summit Place is a quiet street and the homeowners not only contacted police after seeing their screens cut, but also alerted neighbors.

“Now I’m scared because it’s a safe place. I’ve been here for 38 years and nothing has ever happened. It’s scary because they were wearing gray hoodies and you can see their face,” said a resident.

The suspects are probably teenagers, the police said.

Burglary attempts are on the rise so much that lawmakers across the state are calling for harsher penalties as a deterrent.
