Broadway legend Gavin Creel has died at the age of 48 after a sudden battle with cancer

Broadway legend Gavin Creel has died at the age of 48, just months after receiving a cancer diagnosis.

The Tony winner died of aggressive metastatic melanotic sarcoma of the peripheral nerve sheath, according to his publicist Matt Polk.

The diagnosis was made in July 2024.

Creel died on September 30 at his home in Manhattan, his partner Alex Temple Ward later confirmed to People.

He was treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City before later being transferred to a hospice.

Considered one of Broadway’s top talents, Creel is best known for his work in productions of “Hair,” “Into The Woods” and “Hello, Dolly!” and The Book of Mormon.

He won a 2014 Olivier Award for The Book of Mormon and a Tony Award for Hello, Dolly! in 2017.

Last year, Creel won a Grammy for his work on a production of “Into The Woods.”

Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda honored his late friend and co-star.

“Smashed. Gavin Creel was our first King when we only had 11 songs, and he wowed audiences with just a Burger King crown and his overwhelming charisma and talent,” he said, referring to Hamilton.

“He is so loved and it is unimaginable that he is no longer with us.

“My condolences go out to all the friends, family and co-workers who were lucky enough to be around him.

“We love you and we will always love you, Gavin.”

Phillipa Soo, who was the original Eliza in Hamilton, posted on Instagram: “Oh sweet Gavin. You were a shining light in this world.

“You have given us all hope, joy and laughter. You gave us your soul, your mind, your activism, your art. I’ll miss you so much.

“Thank you for being a wonderful person and friend. I will do my best to carry on the light and love you have brought into the world.”

Modern Family’s Jesse Tyler Ferguson posted on Instagram: “Dear Gavin, thank you for being a light in my life for 25 years.

“Your friendship was never taken for granted and I feel so lucky and blessed to have shared this earth with you. Rest now, my sweet friend…until we meet again. I love you.”

Metastatic melanotic peripheral nerve sheath sarcoma forms in the bones or soft tissues of the body.

Creel’s last Instagram post appeared on July 17 and promoted his podcast episode on “The Quiet Part Out Loud.”

He has never discussed his diagnosis publicly.

The artist’s family has asked for donations to Broadway Cares/Equity Fight Aids in his memory.
