million bond set for Sunday stabbing suspect in Jonesboro

JONESBORO, Ark. – Police were investigating a crime scene in connection with a stabbing Sunday evening, Sept. 29, in Jonesboro.

Around 8 p.m., a victim showed up at a local hospital with stab wounds, according to Sally Smith, public information specialist for JPD. With the help of witnesses, a crime scene was located in the 1400 block of Matthews Avenue near Gee Street. The police created crime scene tape and began an investigation.

Two were brought in for questioning, Smith said Sunday evening. On Monday, Smith said several witnesses were being interviewed. The victim was still in the hospital as of 11 a.m. receiving treatment for his wounds.

There was an arrest at 3:45 p.m. Monday, Smith said.

Juan Antonio Bautista-Campos, 32, was arrested for first-degree assault, a Class B felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

The probable cause affidavit released on Wednesday, October 2nd revealed more. Investigators were called to the scene and upon examination found a black shirt and a knife with blood on it. Blood was spilled in several places in the front yard. Several bottles of alcohol were also found.

The alleged victim and witnesses told police that Campos stabbed the victim multiple times in an unprovoked attack in the front yard.

A witness told investigators that Campos asked to be picked up and taken to a bus back to Texas. The witness said Campos indicated that he had recently been involved in an incident and wanted to leave town in a hurry.

Police interviewed Campos and reported that he made incriminating statements about the incident.

Judge David Boling set a $1 million cash or surety bond for Campos on Wednesday. The judge also noted that the suspect has an ICE (Immigration) hold and may face additional charges.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
