In Yucatan, 195 fatal traffic accidents were recorded in the first 9 months of the year

In total, 195 traffic deaths were registered in Yucatan after 9 months, a number very similar to last year when there were 199. It was only on October 1st that the 200th death toll was reached in 2023, like today.

The “detail” is that the number of victims on board motorcycles is much higher, since in 2024 there were 122, while last year in the same period there were 107, representing a 14 percent increase in mortality.

Currently, 74.7 percent of the total number for 2023 has already been reached, so that if the death rate is maintained, the 261 deaths could be reached or exceeded. On average, a Yucatecan dies every 33 hours and 42 minutes. A comparison with other years illustrates the alarming figures of the present.

In 2022, “only” 164 deaths were counted at the end of September and almost 10 years ago, in 2015, there were 156 after 274 days.

At that time, the count of deceased motorcyclists stood at 48, 39.3 percent for the current year. And the difference from second place on the list was not great, as cyclists shared the position with travelers or companions, adding 30 fatal cases. The statistics were completed by 24 drivers and 23 pedestrians.

The 122 motorcyclists who died this year were followed by 21 drivers, 20 pedestrians, 18 travelers or companions and 14 cyclists. This stark contrast has a lot to do with the disproportionate increase in the country’s vehicle fleet.

In 2015, the number of vehicles was 674,366, with units of all sizes and functions added, according to the National Injury Observatory of the year with figures from Inegi.

Likewise, from June 2023 to June 2024, the number increased from one million 34,000 153 units to one million 102,000 172, an increase of 6.58 percent, according to the Public Security Secretariat (SSP).

For this reason, road engineer René Flores Ayora appealed to everyone equally. “I appeal to the responsibility of motorcyclists, drivers, cyclists and pedestrians, because it is up to them that we all reduce the number of deaths from road accidents in Yucatán, which are avoidable, avoidable and have a cause,” he concluded.
