A pedestrian was killed while attempting to cross an unlit area of ​​the North Carolina highway, police said

LAURINBURG, NC (WMBF) – A pedestrian attempting to cross the highway was killed in a crash in Laurinburg Wednesday morning.

Laurinburg police responded to the crash on Highway 74 near Highway 401 around 6 a.m.

Officers found the pedestrian, identified as 44-year-old Damon Giles of Laurinburg, lying on the ground and emergency medical services pronounced him dead.

They also found a 2017 Nissan Murano with severe damage to the front bumper, hood and windshield, but the driver of that car was not injured.

According to police, an investigation revealed that the Nissan was traveling west on Highway 74 and struck Giles as he attempted to cross the westbound lanes.

Police added that Giles was wearing dark clothing and it was an unlit area.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol is assisting the Laurinburg Police Department with the investigation.
