Apple Watch Series 10 and Ultra 2 may get blood oxygen monitoring back, leaker suggests

Apple’s big reveal of the new Apple Watch Series 10 showcased a seriously impressive smartwatch that we awarded 4 out of 5 stars in our review, while the Ultra 2 only received a new (admittedly stylish) black color.

However, one thing was common to the two latest Apple Watches: there is still no blood oxygen monitoring on the models sold in the US.

The feature had been disabled for some time following a legal dispute between Apple and Masimo, a medical device company, which accused the tech giant of patent infringement.

Now, however, a new report suggests that the blood oxygen monitoring feature could be making a comeback, thanks largely to changes at the top of Masimo.

Blood oxygen could soon be available again on the Apple Watch

This comes from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who reports in his Power On newsletter that Joe Kiani, Masimo’s longtime CEO, has resigned and “that could open the door for Apple and Masimo’s lawyers to negotiate a deal to get the blood oxygen measurement to bring new Apple Watches back onto the market.

According to Gurman, Kiani has been “a vocal critic of Apple for years,” which led to some optimism that a deal could be struck.

As for what that looks like, Gurman says: “I don’t think Apple wants to enter into a licensing agreement, but I could imagine a deal – financial or otherwise – that would allow both sides to stop all litigation.”

While a change in leadership isn’t a guarantee that Apple’s best watches will be oxygenated again, it may be an encouraging first step. Further information can be found here!
