Are you registered?

The voter registration deadline for the 2024 general election is 5:00 p.m Friday, October 11, 2024. You can check your voter registration status using the North Carolina State Board of Elections voter search tool Click here and fill out the required fields.

If you miss the registration deadline, you may be eligible to register and vote or make changes to your voter registration during the registration process – except for changing your party affiliation early voting period that begins on Thursday, October 17, 2024.

Same-day registration is available during the early voting period:

Eligible voters who reside in a county but are not yet registered to vote there can register on-site during the early voting period. Once registered, the newly registered voter can immediately vote on the same website. This process is called “same-day registration”. When you register to vote on an early voting site, you can also update your name or address within the same county if necessary.

To register using same-day registration, an individual must meet all of the following eligibility requirements:

  • Be a US citizen.
  • Live in the county in which you are registering and have lived there for at least 30 days before Election Day.
    • The federal Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA) grants special privileges to certain active duty military voters or their dependents, as well as U.S. citizens abroad, allowing expedited registration and voting by mail. More information about military and foreign elections can be found here.
  • You must be at least 18 years old or be so at the time of the general election.
  • Do not serve any sentence for a crime, including probation, post-release supervision, or parole.

Note: An inactive voter is still a registered voter. A voter with inactive status will be asked to confirm their address when they show up to vote. No special document is required.

How to register on the same day:

Individuals can register and vote in person at any early voting location in their county.

Same-day registrants must prove their eligibility and provide proof of residency. A voter confirms their eligibility to vote by completing and signing the North Carolina Voter Registration Application (available in English or Spanish). To register with an early voting site during the early voting period, voters must provide proof of residency. Proof of residency includes any of the following documents, including the voter current Address:

  • North Carolina driver’s license.
  • Other photo ID issued by a government agency, provided the card displays the voter’s current name and address.
  • A copy of a recent utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document showing the voter’s name and address.
  • For students living on campus, a document from an educational institution with the student’s name and on-campus residential address. Alternatively, an educational institution may provide the county election board with a list of students residing in specific campus housing. This is sufficient if a student living in campus accommodation presents a valid student ID card with photo.

Within two business days of the person’s registration, the county elections board will verify the registrant’s driver’s license or Social Security number, update the voter registration database, search for possible duplicate registrations, and begin verifying the registrant’s address by mail. The registrant’s ballot will be counted unless the county board of elections determines that he or she is ineligible to vote under North Carolina law.

All voters registering on the same day will also be asked to present an acceptable photo ID when checking in to vote. This can be the same ID used for same-day registration if the voter used an approved photo ID, such as a driver’s license. However, if the document used for same-day registration is not a voting-approved photo ID, the voter will be required to provide an approved photo ID. Most voters simply show their driver’s license, but many other types of photo IDs are accepted, including many student IDs.
