ATV rider rescued after accident in Colorado wilderness

CUSTER COUNTY, Colo. (KKTV) – Thanks to a team effort, a woman was saved after an ATV accident in rural Custer County over the weekend.

The county search and rescue team said it was called to Rainbow Trail Sunday afternoon along with Wet Mountain sheriff’s deputies. The trail runs for more than 100 miles along the eastern side of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and is described as strenuous with loose, rocky sections and steep sections. Off-road vehicles are allowed, as are hikers and mountain bikers.

The crash was reported north of the Gibson Trail on a steep embankment. Search and rescue services said with the help of other authorities they managed to find the driver and get her back on the road.

“Back on Rainbow Trail, we then transported her to emergency responders using an ATV and the Stokes trash trailer,” Custer County Search and Rescue said.

The woman’s condition was not reported.

Custer County SAR reminds the public to be prepared for anything when heading into the great outdoors.

“Please be safe out there! Remember that rescue operations can take hours. As our weather continues to get cooler, consider packing heavier warm layers, hats, gloves and hand warmers. “You never know when it might come in handy,” it said.
