Patriots champion believes New England should hire Brian Daboll if he is fired by the Giants

Two-time Patriots Super Bowl champion Rob Ninkovich wants New England to upgrade its coaching staff.

Which coach would Ninkovich choose for this purpose? Brian Daboll.

Ninkovich doesn’t want Daboll to replace Jerod Mayo, who is just four games into his tenure as head coach after replacing Bill Belichick, but would like to join Mayo’s staff as New England’s offensive coordinator.

To do this, the Patriots would have to part ways with current offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and things would have to really go downhill for Daboll with the New York Giants. And both are realistic possibilities.

“Get Daboll? Bring him back? I like it,” Ninkovich said on a recent episode of “The Dan and Ninko Show.” “He was my neighbor for years. He was our neighbor. He actually moved into Mayo’s house. I used to go in there and he’d say, ‘Look at all my offensive calls and playbooks’ and I’d say, ‘Wow, cool, impressive.’ He had a shelf in his dining room and it was full of playbooks, dude, I’m totally for it.

Daboll’s time as head coach of the Giants appears to be on thin ice. He has a 16-21 record in two-plus seasons with New York and appears to be headed for a difficult season as the Giants are off to a 1-3 start.

Daboll has an obvious connection to the Patriots, having spent 11 seasons with the franchise over two stints. And his relationship with Mayo, as described by Ninkovich, could make it easier to bring him on board.

Daboll could also be a better fit for Drake’s development than Van Pelt, who has made little impact this season in leading an anemic Patriots offense that ranks second-to-last in the NFL in points per game and last in yards receiving per game is Maye. Maye has similar traits to Bills star quarterback Josh Allen, and Daboll is credited with helping Allen transform into a perennial MVP candidate during his four seasons with Buffalo.

If the Giants decide to move on from Daboll, it might be worth the Patriots checking in with him. We already know that Ninkovich would support the move to hire him.
