Mayor of Loon Lake asks for assistance amid criminal activity and church fire

“Taxpayers are fed up and the word vigilante is thrown around a lot. We’re trying to get everyone to stay calm and let the police do their job,” he said, noting that he, too, felt the frustration.

“My neighbor across the street is 75 years old and has been hit (vandalized) six times in a month,” he said. “I am close to discussing or examining whether it is possible for us to declare a state of emergency. That’s how bad it got.”

The mayor wrote a message to the offices of Scott Moe and Carla Beck asking for assistance.

“I want you to take care of this personally. “People talk about vigilantism and that is a scary idea,” Hirschfeld’s letter said. “If I don’t hear from anyone in the next few days, I’m ready to declare a state of emergency. This is a call for HELP!”

Moe’s office responded to the mayor and informed him that the letter had been forwarded to the Office of the Secretary of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety.

Of the provincial partners Hirschfeld contacted, he said he heard back from MP Gary Vidal. He said the community is looking for more support from additional RCMP officers and possibly the provincial marshal service

He said the amount of damage the village would be responsible for under an insurance claim was about $40,000.

If you have any information about the fire, please contact Loon Lake RCMP.
