John Amos, father from “Good Times,” dies at 84

“He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold,” Amos’ son KC Amos said in a statement

John Amos, the actor who played the father in “Good Times,” has died. He was 84 years old. Amos’ son Kelly Christopher confirmed on Tuesday that the actor died of natural causes in Los Angeles on August 21. “It is with deep sadness that I inform you that my father has made the transition,” KC Amos said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold… and he was loved around the world. Many fans consider him to be their TV father. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding work as an actor on television and film.” Amos played James Evans Sr. in the first three seasons of CBS’ Good Times – Norman Lear’s groundbreaking TV sitcom about a black family. In addition to the role in “Good Times,” the actor also played the role of the adult Kunta Kinte in “Roots,” which earned him an Emmy nomination. Amos also appeared in films such as Coming to America and its 2021 sequel Coming 2 America, 1989’s Lock Up, 1990’s Die Hard 2, 1993’s Night Trap, The Players Club “ from 1998 and “The Beastmaster” from 1982. “My father has enjoyed acting his entire life…” most recently playing himself in “Suits LA” and in our documentary “America’s Dad” about his life journey as an actor,” added KC Amos. “He was my father, my best friend and my hero. Thank you for your prayers and support during this time.” On television, Amos also had a recurring role as Admiral Percy on “The West Wing” and played D.C. Mayor Ethan Baker on “The District.” He also starred in a one-man play called Halley’s Comet. Before becoming an actor, Amos, who was born on December 27, 1939, played football at Colorado State University and attended training camps with both the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs. His showbiz career began when he played weatherman Gordy Howard on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
