Tragic death of hockey player who survived rape sparks outrage in Agra |

Agra: Six months after a state level Hockey player had lodged a rape complaint at Sadar police station in 2017 AgraOn Monday, her body was found hanging from a noose in a city hotel. Her mother claimed it was a travel agency Gagan KumarShe had raped her daughter, which resulted in her “suicide“.
Incidentally, the 22-year-old woman had filed a harassment complaint against Kumar at the same police station four years ago and he got bail. Later, Kumar allegedly raped her and in April a case was registered against her for “raping” him. He was arrested and sent to prison. But three months later he managed to be released on bail again and has been “threatening” the survivor ever since, her family claimed.
On Tuesday, police said that while examining the hockey player’s cell phone, they found a “critical WhatsApp conversation with another player.” During the chat, the hockey player allegedly wrote: “Where are you? I’m scared. Please come to me under any pretext. Even if it’s just for tea, please come.” After an investigation, Kumar was held on charges of “incitement to suicide and threatening behavior,” police added.
Specifically, her family said the woman left home on Saturday saying she was going to attend a hockey tournament. The hotel staff then confirmed that the woman had arrived on Sunday and had checked into a room. Then “a man came towards her at night, stayed in the room for an hour and then left again.” When the room door opened on Monday afternoon, hotel staff forced their way in and found the woman “hanging”.
Police claimed that the “man who met the player” was Kumar. He was seen in CCTV footage from the hotel, the police added.
The woman’s mother said: “Gagan had been harassing us for five years. His family members also threatened my daughter and us with a compromise in the rape case. My daughter had great psychological stress and was traumatized.”
SHO (Tajganj) Jasveer Singh said, “An FIR has been registered based on the complaint received. The accused was arrested and sent to prison on the order of the court. The autopsy report is awaited. The entire matter is being investigated in detail.”
