Trump’s fired military guru says he doubts the Republican nominee can broker peace between Ukraine and Russia

Donald Trump’s former military guru has slammed the former president’s campaign aide that he could negotiate a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia “in a day.”

“I don’t really believe it,” HR McMaster, who was appointed national security adviser by Trump in 2017 and forced out in 2018, said Sunday in an interview with CBS News anchor Robert Costa on “Face the Nation.” .

“I think it’s a real myth, a real misunderstanding of war, to assume that you can get a favorable political outcome without a favorable military outcome. That never really happened during the war.”

“And that’s why I think the right course of action if you want to accelerate progress toward a solution is to convince Putin that he’s losing the war. I think this is the only way to reach a favorable solution.”

“How do you do that? They demonstrate our determination to continue to support Ukrainians in their defense against this ongoing Russian attack.”

Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed that he could broker a peace between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky before he is even sworn in as president.

Meanwhile, Republican politicians have frequently sought to cut U.S. aid to Ukraine, sometimes demanding that Ukraine cede territory to its belligerent eastern neighbor to end the war of aggression.

McMaster, who is currently promoting a new book titled At war with ourselves about his time in the Trump White House, is a retired general and prolific military strategist who made his name with a widely read criticism of America’s war aims in Vietnam.

Barely a year after his appointment to the White House, reports emerged that Trump was planning to fire him, leading to McMaster voluntarily resigning a week later.
