Residents are panicking after drive-by shootings in the city center and are demanding better street lighting

SAN ANTONIO – Home surveillance cameras captured two people gunning up a home east of downtown San Antonio. Shortly afterwards, a child is seen getting on a school bus on the same street.

KSAT spoke with the homeowner of the home who appeared to be the gunmen’s target.

“That was about ten shots, right?” said the man whose house was shot at.

“What goes through your mind when you see this?” asked KSAT’s John Paul Barajas.

“I can’t think; “I’ll just have to wait and see if it happens again,” said the man, who wished to remain anonymous.

The shooting happened around 6 a.m. on Sept. 23 in the 100 block of Alabama Street.

The homeowner said his home was hit four to five times by the gunfire. Fortunately, no people were injured.

“I thank God that we are okay. We’re scared, but we’re okay,” the homeowner said.

The homeowner told KSAT he had no idea why someone would shoot up his house. He believes more street lighting is needed to prevent a repeat of the shooting.

“The neighbors called the lights for this reason. The city isn’t paying attention and neither is CPS Energy,” the homeowner said.

The neighbor also asked to remain anonymous, but agreed with the man whose house was shot at.

“Tell me what it looks like here at night,” Barajas said.

“It’s dark, it’s really dark. “It would be a big advantage to have more lighting,” said the neighbor. “Because you don’t know if you’re outside when they shoot or if they hit the wrong house.”

KSAT contacted District 2 Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez’s office about the additional streetlights.

“Security lights can be installed anywhere if the homeowner is responsible for paying. This is done via CPS Energy. Regular street lights are only justified if there is a gap of more than 600 feet. Right now there is a streetlight at either end of the block and another in the middle. No additional lighting is required,” said Councilman McKee Rodriguez’s office.

“How are you living with everything that happened?” Barajas asked.

“It was difficult. “My wife and daughter don’t stay here in the house for fear of them coming back,” the homeowner said.

San Antonio police have not arrested anyone in this case.
