A relative of the family said one of their relatives brought momos for the family from the local society market on Friday evening. After consuming it, he and the children experienced severe discomfort and symptoms of food poisoning such as vomiting and stomach pain.

Neighbors took the entire family to GIMS for emergency medical care, he said.

Four of the nine victims – Gaurav Singh, 45, and his wife Goldie and two children – are still in hospital. Additionally, two other members of the same family who were also taken to the hospital on Friday were discharged on the same day.

“After eating momos for dinner on Friday evening, the health of all six members of the same family deteriorated rapidly and experienced symptoms of food poisoning, including vomiting, dehydration and nausea. They were admitted to the emergency room,” Singh’s relative said.

Three more victims from their own family have now been released from the GIMS.

Officials at the Food Safety and Drugs Authority, Gautam Budh Nagar, said food samples have been collected and sent for examination.

“The incident has been brought to our notice… teams have been urged into action and the takeaway called ‘Deepak Momos’ has been inspected. We collected samples of momos, chutney and other foods for quality assessment. Based on the findings of the report, action will be taken,” said Sarvesh Mishra, deputy commissioner, food safety and drug administration.

“While others have been discharged, four people, including two children, are being treated. Her condition is stable,” the official added.

The incident has since raised concerns about food safety in the area as residents are now questioning the hygiene standards of local food vendors.

“Several families, including my own, regularly shop at this retailer. After what happened recently, none of us feel safe eating street food anymore,” said Rajesh Kumar, a resident of Eldeco residential complex.
